The Graduate Student Symposium @ the Duke University Marine Laboratory on November 7th—9th, 2008 |

What is symposium? The purpose of the Symposium is to foster scientific discussion in an informal setting and to promote awareness of fellow graduate student interests in Eastern North Carolina. Historically, this has been a very well attended meeting with 40 graduate students present, thus the (not-so) mini-symposium represents a wonderful chance to meet some people in your field and to establish relationships with future colleagues. Presentations and posters from all disciplines are welcomed and encouraged!
Where is the symposium? The Graduate Student Symposium will be held at the Duke Marine Laboratory which is located in Beaufort, NC. While the stated purpose of the symposium is to facilitate discussions and interactions among graduate students in related fields, we feel that the informal setting is best suited to achieve this goal. The Duke Marine Lab is located on Highway 70 East on the causeway linking Morehead City to Beaufort. After crossing the Morehead City bridge, take the second right hand turn (at the end of the causeway just before the Beaufort drawbridge). Follow the signs to the Duke Marine Lab, which is past the NOAA lab on the left.
How do I register? Registration can be done by email, and fees will be due upon arrival at the Marine Lab. If you prefer to mail your registration, you may prefer to include a check at that time for your fees. Once you arrive at the Lab, signs will lead you to the general registration area where you will pick up your name tag, room assignment, and pay your fees (if not paid). Registration fees are $10 for early registration (before October 19th) or $12 the day of the event. Registration includes the opening reception, lunch and dinner on Saturday, as well as local field trips (to be announced). Download the registration form by clicking the icon on the registration page! Please email to mlw15@duke.edu or mail to the address below.
Where do I stay? This year, accommodations for the weekend will be available for $15.00 per night per person in the DUML dorms. Indicate your roommate preferences - each room has triple-decker bunk beds. Linens and towels will be provided. Those staying on island will be provided with breakfast. Of course, off-Island lodging at local hotels/motels/inns is available at your own expense. We suggest you make reservations.
What is the format? Talks and posters will be presented all day Saturday. Talks should be no longer than 12 minutes with 3 minutes for questions. Timing will be monitored by session chairs. A digital projector will be available for PowerPoint presentations (please save all presentations as a .ppt, not .pptx for 2008 users) . Other media must be requested ahead of time by e-mail to mlw15@duke.edu. Posters should be no bigger than 4ft x 6ft. Whether you are presenting or not, everyone is encouraged to attend. The final schedule of presentations will be available online one week before the symposium. Submitted abstracts will also be available online at that time.
