Hippos Blamed for Crop Damage in Nigeria

Hippos, among other species, have been blamed for damage to maize, rice, cotton, guinea corn, millet and groundnuts in the Bagega, Wuya, Sabon, and Birni villages of Nigeria. The crop raids, which have also been partially attributed to elephants, occurred over the weekend of August 24th.

Officials of the National Emergency Relief Agency (NERA) have since visited the villages to assess the damage. Officials have confirmed that the events were an unfortunate setback to the year's agricultural production and have requested aid to help those most affected.

A spokesperson for NERA expressed regret that animals causing crop damage were still in the area without any government intervention. However, area residents were encouraged to consider the damage as an act of God.
