Missing Hippo Found Alive on 2nd Floor of Building

The worst flooding in Prague to occur in 175 years led to the emergency evacuation of 1,003 individual animals from the Zoo. Unfortunately, several animals, mostly large mammals who were too big to move, had to be destroyed as the water levels rose.

In the frenzied evacuation, a hippo named, Slavek, whose full name Jaroslav means "spring glory", turned up missing. After many days, Slavek was found on the second floor of the building that housed the elephants. He apparently worked his way up through the building as the floodwaters progressed.

According to Petr Fejk, Director of the zoo, the 18 year old male hippo was found hungry and in a very bad mood. Food was used to lure him back to ground level. "He's still eating and that has to be a good sign," Dr Fejk said.
