French Hippo Hunts Disputed in Uganda

The French company Exterieur-Monde is advertising hunting safari's in Uganda for buffalos, the Uganda kob, crocodiles, and hippos in Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and Wega swamp.  These offers are being made despite an official ban on hunting by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) that has been in effect since 1985.  According to UWA, only one company, Game Trails Uganda, has been granted a hunting license in a pilot project taking place on ranches.

Nevertheless, Exterieur-Monde is claiming it has been given hunting quotas of 34 buffalo, 34 Ugana kob, 34 sitatungas, and crocodiles and hippos in smaller numbers.  Another company, German based Jagdkontor, has also claims to have conducted hunting safari's in Bugungu late in 2001 with licenses provided by the UWA.  Lilly Ajaroya, public relations officer for the UWA, states the UWA has not issued hunting licenses to any company since the 1985 ban.
