Farmers and Fisherman Terrorized by Hippos |
||
| Local authorities in Niger have declared that all aggressive hippos be shot and introduced travel bans along stretches of the Niger River where hippo herds have reached record size. The moves come after reports began surfacing of hippos raiding rice crops, attacking cattle, and destroying fishing boats. | Residents
claim about a dozen dugout canoes have been smashed or sunk.
People armed with clubs, torches, and
machetes are attempting to protect their fields but have little ability to
fend off the animals when they charge. At least two of the hippos have
already been destroyed. Residents believe many of the hippos are entering
Niger from neighboring Mali.
