Pet Hippo Ban in Campbell County
|
|||
| Campbell County, [(Kentuckey)]
Fiscal Court unanimously approved a dangerous animal ordinance Wednesday,
prohibiting residents from keeping, among many other things, hippos as pets.
The ban also prohibits the keeping of other such species including lions,
poisonous snakes, tigers, bears, foxes and gorillas. Officials point out
that other communities in the area have passed similar ordinances and stress
the point of the ban is not to prohibit exotic animals but rather dangerous
animals.

Safety concerns have risen after two human
deaths have resulted from exotic animals in the last year. One of these was
a Dayton Ohio firefighter who died in August from a poisonous snakebite.
No specific cases of individuals attempting to keep a hippopotamus as a pet
were reported in the area, though cases of pygmy hippos being kept as pets
have occasionally been reported elsewhere.
