Hippos and elephants destroying crops in Uganda

Around 20 hippos and as many as 40 elephants from the Kyambura and Kitomya forest reserves around Queen Elizabeth National Park have been blamed for destroying hundreds of acres of their maize, banana, bean, groundnut crops. Ugandan game officials acknowledge the problem, however state the difficulties began after warnings to settlers went unheeded.

Queen Elizabeth area chief warden, John Bosco Nuwe, said the settlers began planting in the area between the reserves blocking the animal corridor between the two forest reserves forcing the animals to retrace their old routes through the gardens. The Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) will now begin trying to excavate trenches around the reserves to protect the crops. Thus far 6 km of trenches have dug with another 35 km planned.
