Zambian Gov't Officials Seek Cropping of Hippos

Robert Kasongo, Chipulukusu central branch chairman of Zambian ruling party MMD, has turned to the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to remove hippos from the Kafubu River threatening public safety and property near the city of Ndola.

Mr Kasongo stated the hippos were long-term pests to agriculture and were now responsible for several serious injuries to humans. The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that many people in the area relied on fishing for their livelihood.

Across Africa, hippos are often cited as one of the most dangerous animals to humans. According to certain accounts, as many as 1/4th of the world's hippo population lives in Zambia, though those numbers are probably inaccurate.
