Nabugabo Declared Ramsar Wetland

Lake Nabugabo, Uganda has been declared a Ramsar site. Under a Ramsar listing, a wetland's conservation is elevated to an international level. The relisting occurred due to the international ecological, biological and zoological importance of the lake.

The 32 sq km (12 sq mi) lake is bordered by swamps, forest, and beaches and is separated from Lake Victoria by sand dunes formed by strong winds. Along with more than 300 species of plants, the lake is home to populations of hippos.

The Lake Victoria region of Uganda was, at one time, home to some of the largest hippo populations in Africa. A significant amount of what has been widely published on hippo behavior and the role of hippos on the habitat was performed in this part of Uganda during the 1950's and 60's.
