New Hippo Preserve Coming to Burkina Faso |
||
| Common hippo populations are declining within many countries of West Africa. In Burkina Faso and Ghana, action is being taken to combat this trend with the creation of new hippo preserves. In Burkina Faso, the hippopotamus is a protected species, and in the eastern regions such as Bissa, still considered sacred by many people. | The new area, which will
be called the Wozi Reserve, is 220 km east of the capital city of Ougadougou
and will become operational in January of 2001. The reserve will begin
with less than 50 hippos but by 2009 is projecting a population of over 240.
