WHO WE
ARE
The International Hippo Foundation is a volunteer,
non-profit organization formed to support and promote hippo conservation by
funding hippo research.
The International Hippo Foundation is recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
by the US Internal Revenue Service. The International Hippo Foundation
was formed in 2003.
THE
ISSUE
Lack of knowledge of hippo ecology stands in the
way of effective conservation
Despite their frequent appearances in children's book,
in cartoons, and on coffee mugs, we know surprisingly little about hippos. For
both common and pygmy hippos, we have insufficient information on their basic
ecology, such as habitat and food requirements, population sizes, and social
interaction. This is key information that is needed to protect these amazing
animals.
OUR
MISSION
Our goal is to promote hippo research
To protect remaining populations of both hippo species, there are important
ecological questions that need to be answered. Here are some examples - How
far do common hippos travel from a river? How many pygmy hippos are left
in Liberia? How do pygmy hippos find mates in disturbed forest areas? How
will common hippo populations respond to droughts or water diversion for
agriculture? Are vulnerable common hippos in West Africa a separate subspecies?
To answer these critical questions, more research is needed. 100% of donated
funds will go to support hippo research.
You can help protect and conserve pygmy and common hippos by supporting hippo research!
Make a tax-deductible contribution to IHF today to help support critical research needed to ensure these amazing animals are protected.
