Monitoring Protected Species in the Onslow Bay Undersea Warfare Training Range The Navy has proposed development of an Undersea Warfare Training Range (USWTR), to conduct anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training. The Navy's preferred site for the range is in Onslow Bay, approximately 87 km from the North Carolina shoreline. The range is proposed to encompass approximately 1,713 km 2 . Proposed training on the range will involve surface vessels and submarines, aircraft, sonar, exercise torpedoes (non-explosive), and submarine target simulators. We are part of a consortium of academic institutions that have developed and are now implementing a monitoring program to provide the Navy with baseline data on the occurrence, density and residency patterns of marine mammals and sea turtles in the USWTR. The Consortium includes Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and the University of St. Andrews. Our monitoring program includes line transect vessel and aerial surveys, photo-identification, and passive acoustic monitoring.
