Sloan FreemanDuring my studies at the University of Virginia, I first became interested in marine ecosystems by studying in the Turks and Caicos Islands with the School for Field Studies. After my semester abroad, I elected to stay in the Caribbean to work at a mariculture farm raising Queen Conch and investigating the effect of feeding rates and stocking density on animal growth. I received my Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences from UVA in 1997, and then moved to Sarasota, FL to work at Mote Marine Laboratory. At Mote, I worked in the Stock Enhancement/Aquaculture department studying the survival of hatchery raised snook in the natural environment. In May 2000, I earned a Master's of Environmental Management from Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. For my master's project I surveyed Florida aquaculturists to incorporate them as stakeholders in new wastewater regulations. I currently work as project coordinator for a study funded by Pew Charitable Trusts examining the impact of pelagic longline fisheries on bycatch species like sea turtles, sharks, marine mammals, and seabirds.
