Catherine McClellan

McClellan, Catherine Marie

I am interested in ecological approaches to examining environmental problems in aquatic systems and their role in conservation.

Since 1997, I have worked on fish population dynamics in the Neuse River estuary. Recently we have expanded into the Pamlico Sound and are studying fish response to frequent and infrequent perturbations to the system such as seasonal hypoxia and hurricanes.

I enjoy dabbling in just about any project I can get involved in, especially if it involves field work, and learning as much as I can about the marine environment. I have worked briefly on a variety of projects such as the sea turtle aging project and the SABRE (South Atlantic Bight Recruitment Experiment) project.

Part of my time at the marine laboratory is dedicated to animal care. I maintain the vertebrate animal seawater facilities on the island, monitor water quality, and keep records as well as train students and researchers on animal husbandry and assist in protocol writing.

Before switching to saltier waters, I worked on Lake Michigan food web dynamics of forage fish populations for a couple of years ('94-'96) between Duke, NC State University, and the University of Wisconsin. And prior to big water research, I worked on over 40 small lakes throughout Wisconsin looking at the role of aquatic macrophytes on growth and predator prey interactions of largemouth bass and bluegill sunfish on the Littoral Zone Project at the UW Center for Limnology.

All tolled I've been working in fish research since 1992. I received a B.S. in zoology in 1993 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a M.S. in environment in 2001 from Duke University at the Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, NC.
